Sleep mat

What is the device?

The sleep mat sits under the mattress and can measure movement and heart rate throughout the night. It can register when someone gets in and out of bed, and the different states of sleep and wakefulness through the night.

Why is it part of the study?

The sleep mat allows us to research the relationship between sleep, circadian rhythms and dementia.

How does it work?

The mat is connected to the internet via Wifi to send data to the Minder platform. It uses air pressure and sensors to measure movements and heart rate through the mattress.

How is the device used in the Living Lab?

We use the sleep mat in the lab to test the platform, including the Minder dashboard and app, and demonstrate the whole system to visitors.

Which teams are developing and using the device?

The centre includes a dedicated research programme investigating sleep and circadian patterns with dementia, led by Prof Derk-Jan Dijk in Surrey. The sleep mat is also used by the monitoring and clinical team to monitor the health and well-being of participants.

Where can I find out more information about the device?

We use the Withings Sleep Mat in the living lab.
